Religious Education

In RE, we see an opportunity to use empathy and a great source of stories, experiences and morals to build on children's spoken language, reading, ICT, research and writing skills successfully. We then encourage our pupils to embrace and communicate the knowledge and beliefs of their Catholic Christian faith, in the context of the multi cultural society they live in, in our British society of today. We follow the Catholic 'All that I am' scheme of work. (See uploaded document at the bottom of our Catholic Faith page)


Welcome to our Curriculum page. We are proud of the curriculum we offer at our school and are also proud to say that it is constantly changing.

Each year, in the Autumn term, parents are given key objectives, pertinent to their child’s class to be taught, from the national curriculum. These may vary slightly, depending on the needs of the individual. Then, each term, parents receive an overview sharing details of all aspects of the curriculum for the forthcoming period of time.

The Curriculum in Brief

It is virtually impossible to encapsulate our curriculum in a single document; it evolves, shifts, alters and adapts daily, in line with the needs of the children. We are proud of that.

Our Assistan head teacher, Mrs Smith, is our Curriculum Co-ordinator and is always more than willing to chat about changes, innovations and listen to ideas.

Here is a brief summary of some of the things we use to support and deliver the curriculum effectively. Also please look on Pg 13-18 of our School Prospectus for further details on our Curriculum

Early Years

In Early Years, we successfully follow the Foundation stage Curriculum. Children are nurtured and encouraged to learn about their world and about themselves, using our rich indoor and outdoor environment and wisely guided by our very dedicated staff. The characteristics of effective learning are modelled and rewarded alongside our prime and specific areas of learning. Children are guided in how to communicate, how to socialise and their emotional maturity is carefully supported and analysed.

Phonics

We have great success with Phonics, using Letters and Sounds as our overriding scheme. We do, however, dip into Jolly Phonics and other resources, as needed, as we recognise the need to vary our approaches according to the responses of the children. In recent years, much time has been spent in updating staff and parents; our success is apparent in our results. We do also recognise that occasionally, some children, particularly those with specific needs, flourish using alternative strategies to supplement or to replace our phonics teaching. We strive to support each child appropriately to achieve their full potential.

Reading

In Reading, we use a variety of home readers, including Bug Club and Project X. In 2016/17 we hope to extend our reading bank further. We teach an appreciation and a love of books and poetry via library clubs, choral speaking, peer group booster support and in class book themes. We also teach children to analyse literature appropriately and record their findings successfully.

Maths

We use a variety of different resources, including the new Abacus, mymaths and other schemes to dip in and out of. Our Maths teaching aims to be challenging, vibrant and practical. Children are challenged to learn the 'basics' via clubs, homework, testing and praise. With these basics in place, problem solving becomes much more achievable.

Writing

Our children are encouraged to know what they are good at and know what they need to do to improve. We embrace themes and engaging opportunities such as school trips and activities, to give purpose and value to their writing. We encourage them to self assess and peer assess, edit and redraft- then be proud of their efforts, from varying starting points.

We are pleased with the adaptations we have made to our teaching of Foundation subjects here at SMA. When the new Ofsted framework was released in draft form, we conducted research into suggested ways of meeting the demands within the constraints of a primary timetable. We combined our findings and we looked carefully at what we already knew about how children at SMA learn.
We produced a long term plan of projects, carefully selected to give breadth and balance, whilst addressing the necessary subject areas for children in school. We learned much about our children and have realised that with good links, careful structuring and regular assessment, our children really are learning and remembering more, through our changed approach.
